The Department of Neurology at Wake Forest School of Medicine is internationally recognized for excellence in stroke and cerebrovascular disease, and neurosonology.  Funded as a PGY-5 position, this ACGME-accredited Fellowship is a one-year experience involving clinical care and research.

The fellowship is customizable depending upon the candidate's career goals to focus more heavily on clinical stroke or research. Required rotations are the inpatient stroke service, interventional endovascular neuro-radiology, basic neuroimaging and neurosonology, and neurosciences ICU. The stroke fellow will be well-trained in acute evaluation and management of stroke patients and will receive significant training in the use of intravenous thrombolytics and endovascular treatments.

The remainder of the year can be focused on clinical or research endeavors.  Research opportunities include acute stroke treatment, stroke prevention, traumatic brain injury, and many possible projects using carotid ultrasound and TCD (including monitoring), screening studies, stroke risk factor identification, subclinical disease identification with carotid IMT testing, and TCCD. 

All Fellows attend Neurovascular Ultrasound Courses, and meet eligibility criteria for Neurosonology Certification Examination of the American Society of Neuroimaging.  North Carolina Baptist Hospital is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission.  Fellows will interact with the Multi-Disciplinary Stroke Team and Stroke Service, with dedicated Stroke faculty (Drs. Bushnell, Lefkowitz, Reynolds, Tegeler and Craig). Fellows will be eligible for the Vascular Neurology Boards after successful completion of the fellowship.
