Primary Stroke Center
Ward A. Riley Ultrasound Center
The Ward A. Riley Ultrasound Center is a major center for risk identification and disease prevention at Wake Forest Baptist. If you are at risk for heart disease or stroke, we can evaluate you at the Center and determine your risk-level.
Assessing Patient’s Risk for Vascular Disease
At the Center, we have been studying cardiovascular vascular disease for more than two decades and have patient data that tells us the risk for a patient depending on the wall of the carotid artery. We use ultrasound testing performed at the Centerto measure the wall of your carotid artery.
We then compare your measurements to huge data sets that were created here at Wake Forest Baptist. Thousands of patients were followed for years to determine if they developed vascular disease based on a variety of factors—including the thickness of their carotid artery walls.
Because of this data, we are able to determine the likelihood that you will as well by comparing the measurement of your carotid wall to thousands of other patients who are your gender and race. This information gives us the ability to determine your risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
