About the Department of Neurosurgery

Our physicians have been pioneers in using innovative therapies like electrical impulses to control the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and gene therapy to treat brain tumors.

The Brain Tumor Center of Excellence was formed in 2003 as a collaborative effort between neurosurgery, oncology and radiation oncology. The Center is focused on becoming a national leader in patient care and research.

Image-guided surgery plays an important role in many of the brain and spine procedures performed at Wake Forest Baptist.  Neurosurgeons at Wake Forest Baptist perform nearly 1,000 image-guided surgery procedures each year. Such procedures allow tremendous precision so that adjustments or refinements can be made as the surgery proceeds.
