Ride for the Ribbon Feted at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Chuck Ambrose, president of Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, North Carolina, his wife Kris and an entourage of friends and supporters will make a “pit stop” at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on July 9, on the way to completing a 1,000-mile bicycle trip to Boston.

The purpose of the Ride for the Ribbon tour is to raise both awareness of breast cancer, and funds for the newly-developed Pfeiffer New Cancer Initiative Fund at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

The impetus behind the ride and fund was Kris Ambrose’s personal experience as a young breast cancer survivor. Diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, Ambrose was treated at the Breast Care Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The major factor in the successful treatment of her cancer was that it was detected early.

Recognizing the ongoing need for awareness building and research in the early detection of breast cancer, Ambrose developed the idea of a 1,000 mile, fund-raising bike tour from the Pfeiffer University campus – through her hometown of Derry, New Hampshire – to Boston, Massachusetts, site of the annual meeting of United Methodist College presidents. They will arrive in Boston on July 27.

The goal of the Ride for the Ribbon is to raise $100,000 toward an endowment at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, which will be used for cancer research and programs targeting early breast cancer detection. Part of the monies raised will also be used for care and support of young people whose families are affected by cancer.

The group will be feted at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center at 5p.m.
