Lyles Named Chairman of Biochemistry

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Douglas Lyles, Ph.D., of Winston-Salem, has been named professor and chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

“We are fortunate to have a scientist and leader of Dr. Lyles’s caliber to head this department,” said William Applegate, M.D., professor and dean of the School of Medicine. “He was selected from a group of extremely talented candidates.”

The Department of Biochemistry has 25 faculty members who are involved in research of cancer, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, the metabolism of oxygen and structural biology. Lyles, who has an active research program in viral diseases, has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles.

Lyles, a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, has been with the Medical Center since 1978. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and earned his doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of Mississippi. He completed post-doctoral training at the Rockefeller University.
