Local Ophthalmologist Accepted into National Eye Society

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – R. Patrick Yeatts, M.D., an ophthalmologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been accepted into the American Ophthalmological Society. Only two other ophthalmologists from North Carolina are members.

Invitation in the society is by nomination only. Candidates must be board certified and provide proof of continuing scholarship. To be accepted, candidates must write a thesis that contributes toward the advancement of the science and art of ophthalmology. Yeatts’ thesis was on quality of life in patients with Graves ophthalmopathy, a condition associated with thyroid disease.

Yeatts, an ophthalmic plastic and orbital surgeon, is vice chairman and professor of ophthalmology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard University.

The society was founded during the Civil War and is the first specialty society in the United States.
