WFUBMC Employees Named Distinguished Alumni

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Two Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center employees are among 40 distinguished East Carolina University (ECU) College of Allied Health Sciences alumni who were recently recognized by the university.
David Blalock, M.A., chief speech pathologist in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Department, and Susan Hiss Butler, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Otolaryngology Center for Voice and Swallowing Disorders, were recognized Oct. 27 during the university’s homecoming and the College of Allied Health Sciences’ 40th anniversary celebration.
Butler, 37, was the youngest distinguished alumnus recognized in her program area. She earned a bachelor’s of art degree from North Carolina State University, a master’s of science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her doctor of philosophy from ECU in 2001.
Blalock earned both his bachelor’s of science degree and his master’s from ECU. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor of surgery (otolaryngology), and as a clinical instructor, Division of Surgical Sciences, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
The College of Allied Health Sciences was established in 1967 as the Life Sciences and Community Health Institute. It is the largest provider of allied health professionals to the state with an enrollment of more than 700 students, of which 61 percent are at master’s and doctoral levels.
