Busija Receives Honorary Doctorate from Renowned European Med School

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – David W. Busija, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded the prestigious Doctorem Medicinae Honoris Causa by the University of Szeged Medical School (formerly Albert Szent-Györgyi Faculty of Medicine), Hungary, one of the prominent medical schools of Europe.

The honorary degree, presented during a ceremony at the university in November attended by the president of Hungary, was awarded for sustained contributions to research and academic development in the Department of Physiology at the University of Szeged over the past 15 years, including the training of numerous visiting faculty, students and post-doctoral fellows. The continuing collaboration has resulted in more than 55 joint publications.

Following the award ceremony and reception, Busija described his recent research to the faculty and visitors of the University of Szeged in a seminar entitled, “Mitochondrial influences on brain:  neuroprotection and vasodilation in health and disruption by insulin resistance.”

Busija received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1978 and is the author of more than 270 publications on the physiology of the brain and cerebral circulation, and his research is supported currently by four individual research grants from the National Institutes of Health. He also has long-standing professional relationships with Semmelweis Medical School in Budapest, Hungary, and Keio Medical School in Tokyo, Japan.
