Neurologist to Receive Research Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Michael Cartwright, M.D., a neurologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, was presented the President’s Research Initiative Award by the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) on Oct. 9, 2009.

“This is a great honor and signifies the value of well-orchestrated, interdisciplinary research,” said Allison Brashear, M.D., chair of neurology. “He is to be applauded on his hard work and leadership throughout this project.”

Cartwright’s abstract, “Median Nerve Changes Following Steroid Injection for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome” was one of nine abstracts chosen for the award. AANEM’s selection process is based on scientific merit and how well the abstract is written and discussed. Cartwright collaborated with Ethan R. Wiesler, M.D., Joseph A. Molnar, M.D., Ph.D., Anthony J. DeFranzo Jr., M.D., all from Wake University Baptist Medical Center and Joon Shik Yoon, Ph.D., from Korea University and George Chloros M.D., from Virginia State University.  In addition, David White, a Wake Forest School of Medicine student contributed to the study.

Cartwright joined the faculty as an assistant professor of neurology in 2008.  He received his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and completed his residency and fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
