Wake Forest Baptist Simulation Program Designated by the American Society of Anesthesiologists

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – October 27, 2010 –The Center for Applied Learning Simulation Program at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is the first in North Carolina to be designated as an “Endorsed Simulation Educational Program” by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).

ASA endorsement allows Wake Forest Baptist to specifically train physicians for the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA). The inclusion of simulation education as a Practice Performance Assessment and improvement activity by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) illustrates the importance of simulation-based education for practicing anesthesiologists.

"This national endorsement as a leader in patient simulation is one more step in a long tradition of excellence established by the Department of Anesthesia, as well as a host of other faculty contributors in simulation education across many academic and hospital departments," said Jim Johnson, Ph.D., director of the Wake Forest Center for Applied Learning.

The Center for Applied Learning Simulation Program is one of only 22 programs endorsed by the ASA from within teaching hospitals and academic medical centers throughout the United States. Wake Forest Baptist is now one of only three endorsed programs in the entire southeastern United States. North Carolina alone has more than 80 educational institutions and hospitals which boast patient simulation capabilities.

The capacities for high fidelity patient simulation which began in the original Patient Simulation Lab (PSL) at Wake Forest Baptist have been recently augmented by a significant investment in the relatively new Surgery Academy Mock OR and by recent investments in other simulation equipment and capacities.
