Wake Forest Baptist Physician Named One of 100 of the Best Surgeons in America

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – April 13, 2011– Charles L. Branch, M.D., chair and professor of Neurosurgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been named to the 100 Best Spine Surgeons and Specialists in America list by Becker's Orthopedic & Spine's Annual Review.

Physicians named to the list were selected for their leadership in prestigious spine organizations, their immense procedural and technological contributions to the field and other notable accomplishments pertaining to spine surgery.

A renowned international lecturer, Branch has published 20 book chapters and 33 journal articles. In 2003, he co-founded the Brain Tumor Center of Excellence of Wake Forest Baptist in order to further develop a major research initiative to cure brain cancer. Branch is also a pioneer in the development of spinal fusion techniques that are recognized and used by spinal surgeons worldwide.

Branch received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1981. He completed neurosurgical training at Wake Forest School of Medicine in 1987. Additionally, he completed a clinical fellowship in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California in San Francisco. 

Branch returned to Wake Forest as a faculty member in the Department of Neurosurgery in 1987 and was appointed chairman of Neurosurgery in 2000.

The list was created through extensive research and recommendations from around the country before being vetted through some of the most well-respected spine surgeons in America. Other criteria examined for inclusion on this list includes leadership roles within professional organizations, charitable service, spine research accomplishments and other notable achievements.

Physicians do not pay and cannot pay to be selected as a best physician on this list.
