Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Wake Forest Baptist Opens

New Office is First in North Carolina and One of 38 in the Country

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 18, 2012 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s high-performing endocrinology program raised the bar for the quality of diabetes care this month when it opened The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Wake Forest Baptist Health office at its Medical Plaza – County Club location on April 30.

The Joslin Diabetes Center is an international leader in diabetes research, care and education that has been affiliated with Harvard Medical School since its founding in 1898. The Joslin practice model offers the full range of diabetes services in a single location with convenient scheduling and easy access to related medical services.

Larry Cantley, M.D., medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Wake Forest Baptist Health, said this represents the most effective way to provide related medical services to patients with diabetes. “More than 25 million children and adults have diabetes in the United States and another seven million do not know they have the disease. It is a health crisis that we cannot ignore,” Cantley said. “The Joslin Diabetes Center model has proven to be effective and efficient in treating patients with diabetes.”

Building on Wake Forest Baptist’s extensive diabetes research and clinical expertise, the new The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Wake Forest Baptist Health will help patients better manage their type of diabetes and prevent the complications that often occur as a result of the disease. Adult and pediatric patients can be seen by a team of medical experts – an endocrinologist, ophthalmologist, podiatrist and diabetes educator – all in the same day, if needed. The facility also houses a community classroom with a teaching kitchen for diabetes education. When fully operational, the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Wake Forest Baptist Health will have eight board-certified endocrinologists, four who specialize in the care of adults and four in pediatric care, in addition to four nurse practitioners with similar specialization and seven certified diabetes educators.

Medical Plaza – Country Club, at 4618 Country Club Road offers free parking.
