Burke is nationally recognized as a scientist evaluating cardiovascular disease in population settings. He is the Principal Investigator and National Steering Committee Chair for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a study that seeks to better understand the importance of subclinical vascular disease in predicting heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. He is also the PI for the Cardiovascular Heath Study (investigating heart disease in older adults), and the MESA Air Pollution Study (investigating the importance of air pollution on heart disease). Dr. Burke is the director for the Division of Public Health Sciences, a large multidisciplinary research group at the medical school seeking to identify better ways to reduce chronic disease in the community.
