After completing medical school at Vanderbilt University in1983 and surgical residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center in 1989, Dr. Howerton undertook fellowships in surgical endoscopy and laparoscopy (Cleveland, 1991) and Hepatobiliary Surgery (London, 1992) before coming to Wake Forest Baptist. His clinical interests involve tumors of the liver, pancreas and esophagus and complex gastrointestinal surgery. He's involved in a busy clinical service that includes the teaching of residents and medical students and he serves as the Chief Medical Officer. As such he is involved in improving the processes and systems the medical center uses to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care. He is listed in Best Doctors in America.
