Associate Professor- Ophthalmology

Dr. Walter is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cornea and refractive surgery, joining Wake Forest Baptist in 1996. Dr. Walter received his medical training at Duke University, and completed his Ophthalmology residency and fellowship at Emory University. He was the first to adjust for humidity to improve LASIK outcomes, based on this research. Dr. Walter invented a new surgical tool called the EndoSaver™ Corneal Endothelium Delivery Instrument which will make it easier for eye surgeons to insert the living donor tissue without damaging the tissue or crushing the cells. He has authored several articles related to LASIK surgery and his ground breaking research has been featured in the New York Times, Time Magazine, Men's Health Magazine, Shape Magazine, LA Ttimes and CNN. Dr. Walter has performed LASIK on numerous physicians and surgeons in the area including cardiologists, heart surgeons, neurosurgeons, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, internists, and even an ophthalmologist. He has also done surgery on local news anchors and NASCAR drivers. Dr. Walter had LASIK surgery himself in 1999 and is still seeing 20/15 today. He is listed in Best Doctors in America.
