The Professional Development Council defines, implements and maintains educational standards that promote professional growth and ongoing clinical competency.

Professional Development Council activities include:

  • Facilitating an annual educational needs assessment to determine the educational priorities in conjunction with Staff Development
  • Promoting and facilitating the certification/recertification process
  • Defining preceptor roles and responsibilities
  • Promoting nurse participation in nursing professional organizations
  • Participating in nursing recruitment, recognition and retention programs
  • Reviewing and defining the development of competency-based orientation programs and specialty classes as developed by Staff Development
  • Coordinating the Staff Nurse Career Advancement Program
  • Facilitating activities related to Nurses’ Week
  • Coordinating the process for annual generic and unit-specific competencies
  • Promoting the nurse’s professionalism through the support and emphasis of professional practice
