Animal Research Oversight

The Animal Research Oversight program is independent of the Wake Forest Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Research. The goal of the program is to help fulfill the institution's responsibility for ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing animal research, and to promote an environment in which animal research will be conducted according to the highest standards.

The primary responsibilities of the program are quality assurance, post approval monitoring of IACUC protocols, assessment of adverse events, and incidents of noncompliance.

In addition, the Animal Research Oversight Program is available to help investigators and their research teams understand and comply with federal regulations in order to promote proactive self-regulation. Educational programs in compliance objectives, best practices and animal welfare are provided several times throughout the year.

Post-Approval Monitoring Reviews (PAM)
Post-approval reviews of IACUC protocols are performed to provide assurance to regulatory agencies and the IACUC that animal experiments are performed in accordance with approved IACUC protocols. The Animal Monitoring and Oversight Specialist confirms consistency and accuracy of approved protocols and practice.

Reporting Animal Concerns:

WFU personnel are strongly encouraged to report any concerns about the misuse of animals at the school. Concerns should be raised first with your supervisor and/or the principal investigator of the research project. If the issues are not resolved to your satisfaction, you may also leave a message on the WFU IACUC Animal Concern Line. Anonymous messages are welcome, and all concerns are investigated.
