Dr. Charlie Shaw, a native of North Carolina, joined the Office of Technology Asset Management (OTAM) in the summer of 2011 from the University of Illinois at Chicago Office of Technology Management where he served the office as a technology screener and associate technology manager. Charlie currently manages a portfolio of a range of technologies, and is tasked with the evaluation, marketing and licensing of these innovations.

Prior to joining OTAM, Charlie was a visiting scholar and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago in the area of molecular oncology and examined the mechanisms of genetic variation on prostate cancer among various communities and how that variation contributes to inter-individual variation in disease susceptibility.

Dr. Shaw earned his doctorate degree from Duke University. As a member of Duke University’s Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Department and the University Program in Genetics and Genomic, Dr. Shaw was awarded numerous fellowships and grants, including Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. Dr. Shaw’s dissertation worked explored the interaction between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and human inflammatory genes elucidating an alternative mechanism for HPV-induced tumorigenesis. Previously, Dr. Shaw earned his BS in biology from Davidson College and a diploma from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

When asked about his thoughts on the field of technology transfer, he remarked “I am very interested in using my scientific background and business experience to assist academic inventors to identify and commercialize potential human health technologies. In this role, innovations we get into the market can help alleviate suffering and disease from my family, my neighbors and from billions of others I could never meet individually across the planet.”
