What is an Otolaryngologist?

Insight into Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists

Mcguirt actionOtolaryngology translates as the study of the ear and larynx (or voice box), but our training encompasses disorders affecting the head and neck region.  Otolaryngologists are surgeons who also have medical expertise of the disorders affecting the ears, nose, face, sinuses, throat, larynx (voice box), and neck.

At Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center we treat rare and complicated problems that require specialized care and training as well as common problems.  Our patients include adults and children.  Our specialty includes seven  main focuses:  Pediatrics, Head and Neck Cancer, Voice and Swallowing, Facial Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Sinus and Allergy, Surgery for Sleep disorders, and Otology (disorders of the ears and/or hearing).

Nationally, we are represented as the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeons.

Physician Training

Goldman actionOtolaryngologists are certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. To qualify for certification each physician must have:

  • Graduated from college
  • Graduated from Medical School
  • Completed a one year surgical internship
  • Completed four years of surgical training as a resident physician in Otolaryngology.
  • Pass the American Board of Otolaryngology examinations.

Our faculty members have pursued additional training through fellowships, courses, and educational meetings.  We continue to learn and teach throughout our careers.
