Desensitization
Often following an injury, the skin of the hand, or area around the injury, can be very sensitive and painful. The skin must get used to being touched again for the tenderness to go away. If sore areas are not touched, they may remain very sensitive and tender. In hand therapy, the therapist works with patients on getting these areas used to being touched. Patients are given individualized Home Programs designed specifically for the type of sensitivity they are experiencing.
