Michael A. Nader, PhD - The Lab Environment
Wet lab area: here we weigh out drugs, prepare catheters, sterilize surgical instruments and analyze videotaped behaviors (social behavior, locomotor activity, drug-induced yawning, etc). Also in this area are computer workstations for data analysis, including PET imaging analysis. Notice the fuzzy balls – enrichment for folks in the lab!
Animal Housing Corridor: on the left side of this corridor are animal housing rooms and to the right are procedure rooms and a surgical suite. Everything we need is on this floor.
Experimental Chamber: the primary dependent variable for all of our studies is behavior. Inside these chambers, animals press levers to deliver various reinforcers. All of our experimental designs consider the work of Kelleher, Morse and Dews (and many other pioneers) and the role of environmental context, reinforcer magnitude, alternative reinforcers and behavioral and pharmacological history.
Treatment Room: down the hall from animal housing is a treatment room. Everything we need for aseptic surgical procedures, including anesthesia, is in this room.
Graduate Student Office: this office area is where you’ll find the young minds of the lab (not shown in this picture!). It is located right next to Dr. Czoty’s and my offices, so we are readily available to view new data, answer questions or discuss research directions. The Graduate Student Office also has a large window for viewing of traffic on Business 40 and other fine sites!
Break room: also situated near the lab and the graduate student offices, and right outside my office and Dr. Czoty’s office, is this beautiful break room. Coffee is always on! We have our lab meetings here and weekly “Science Lunch” meetings where we discuss current articles, data or other topics (like politics!).
