Brief Summary of Research
The research conducted in this laboratory is aimed at understanding the neuropharmacology of psychostimulant abuse, primarily cocaine, with the goal of identifying novel treatment strategies. To accomplish this goal, we utilize schedule-controlled behavior, drug self-administration, drug discrimination, social behavior, unconditioned behaviors, PET imaging and pharmacological challenges in nonhuman primate models. We are also interested in neurochemical, physiological and hormonal changes due to chronic drug exposure, including the long-term consequences on cognitive performance. Finally, we examine sex differences in our subjects; we have the only laboratory in the world using socially housed monkeys (male and female) in intravenous drug self-administration studies.
