Cancer remains a leading cause of death in America, and presents an important public health challenge to the United States in terms of incidence, mortality and economic burden. In order to reduce mortality rates, physicians will need diagnostic tools, which will allow them to evaluate metastatic potential and potential response to therapy in addition to providing confirmation of tumor burden at the time of diagnosis. To accomplish this goal, our research program will utilize the tools of molecular biology, chemistry and radiochemistry to develop targeted agents for cancer detection and therapy. Specifically, our research seeks to:
- Identify new ligands that specifically target cancer cells using phage display and one-bead, one-compound combinatorial methods.
- Use radiochemistry to label these cancer specific ligands to create radiopharmaceuticals that can be used as diagnostic and therapeutic agents for cancer detection and treatment, respectively.
- Incorporate these radiopharmaceuticals into larger structures using nanotechnology to create multi-modal and theranostic agents for cancer treatment and detection.
