Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine Research
Allow us to formally welcome you, our guest, to the website for the Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine Research at Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Aims:
* To provide expertise for mapping disease-related genes resonsible for patient phenotypes with focus on respiratory diseases, cancer, and diabetes.
* Analyze criteria such as clinical evaluations, induced phenotypes, biomedical imaging and biomarkers.
* To provide a key role in supporting facilitation of investigators, providing educational programs, clinical genomic trials to preditict patient response to therapy, personalize therapy and design preemptive and new strategies.
History:
The Center for Human Genomics was established in June 2000 as part of a new $67 million research initiative at Wake Forest School of Medicine. The Center was comprised of faculty members with expertise in a variety of disciplines, whose primary purpose was to investigate genetic mechanisms in the development and progression of complex human diseases. Our research priorities included cardiovascular disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, and pulmonary disease.
In October of 2009, our center was renamed the Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine Research to reflect a widening of the scope of the Center's aims. Personalized medicine focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disease on the basis of genes and environmental factors specific to an individual. A particular combination of genes and environmental factors might indicate that a disease process is likely to be more (or less) aggressive, enabling the physician to design a treatment plan with a greater likelihood of success for a particular patient.
Organization:
The structure of the Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine Research is designed for systematic, high-throughput genetic analysis. Using laboratories that are specialized for high-throughput genotyping, sequencing, and functional genomics, combined with an experienced analytical core, the Center has generated and analyzed considerable amounts of data that have lead to meaningful discoveries in each of its target areas.
