Comparative Medicine

Comparative Medicine

The Section on Comparative Medicine is an internationally recognized leader in the translation of basic to clinical science. Our faculty seeks to foster an intellectual and collaborative environment that is dedicated to understanding diseases of public health relevance via preclinical trials and biomedical research in nonhuman primates and other animals.

Comparative Medicine's research areas include: the effect of nutrition on disease risk, women’s health, cardiovascular disease, obesity/insulin resistance and diabetes, social stress and disease, behavioral medicine, and reproductive oncology, with the majority of studies utilizing one of a range of available nonhuman primate models.

Our uniquely skilled faculty and staff serve as Wake Forest’s center for primate expertise; they administer the Wake Forest Primate Center as well as residencies and research fellowships including a post-DVM research training program, and two training programs for specialty board certification in veterinary medicine (Laboratory Animal Medicine and Anatomic Pathology).

The faculty of Comparative Medicine is diverse and includes DVMs, PhDs and DVM/PhDs -- several with diplomate status in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or the American College of Veterinary Pathology).
