Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource

Services We Provide

To help achieve this goal we provide the following services:

  • Ensure that study designs (for both protocol and grant submissions) are adequate, including development of study hypotheses, explicit specification of primary and secondary outcomes, determination of required sample sizes, appropriate data collection, and assessment of the feasibility of trials based on previous accrual to other similar trials
  • Write the statistical sections for all treatment protocols, including plans for interim monitoring of trial results
  • Develop randomization schemes for studies (i.e., phase III clinical trials)
  • Assist with the development of sample survey instruments
  • Develop sampling plans
  • Monitor ongoing protocol accrual
  • Provide methodologic support to Cancer Center investigators
  • Perform interim data analyses
  • Perform ad hoc and final analyses
  • Collaborate with investigators when interpreting and publishing results
  • Collaborate with Cancer Center members in the development and submission of externally funded grants
  • Participate in Cancer Center committees responsible for the scientific and administrative direction of the Cancer Center
  • Grant Planning Session

Members of the BBSR have extensive expertise in design and analysis methods including such areas as:

General Methods:

  • Longitudinal mixed modeling designs for data with repeated measures
  • Propensity score methods for handling non-randomized studies
  • Survival analysis methods with time dependent covariates
  • Evaluation of new diagnostic tests and/or tracers
  • High Dimensional Data Methods:
    • Variable Screening and Selection
    • Filtering and Normalization
    • Differential expression/abundance
    • Data visualization
    • Principal Component Analysis, Clustering, and Classification
    • Prognostic/diagnostic multivariate modeling
  • Design Issues:
    • Methods of controlling false discovery rates
    • Feature selection/validation including pathway analysis

For analyses performed at the completion of a trial, the BBSR member and PI work together to follow the analysis plan described in the protocol. The PI and BBSR member discuss the results until all questions are answered.  During the last funding cycle, the BBSR developed a series of automated data reports to provide to investigators when accrual goals are met.  These reports include patient disposition information such as response status, toxicity summaries and demographic characteristics.  Prior to these reports, the PI typically initiated production of results for a protocol, however the BBSR determined that providing descriptive and summary information proactively to PIs (prior to a formal request for such information) for protocols that achieve target accruals enhanced productivity by expediting the process of manuscripts development.

With the expansion of expertise for the BBSR to include genomic and additional bioinformatics based analyses, the faculty and staff in the BBSR now assist in performing many different analyses using data that is generated by the Cancer Genomics Core.   The following is a list of some of the data types that the BBSR has experience in analyzing:

Data Types:

  • mRNA
  • miRNA
  • RNA-Seq
  • Axon-Seq
  • Whole genome seq
  • Methylation array/seq
  • CLIP (Cross-linking immonoprecipitation)-Seq
  • ChIP (Chromatin immunoprecipitation)-Seq
  • SNPs
  • Proteomics
  • Customized RT-PCR arrays
