Amy Hicks Wins Two Awards

Amy Hicks
Amy Hicks, B.S., a former student researcher at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Institute for Regenerative Medicine, was awarded a prestigious Society for Neuroscience Travel Award to present her work at the  8thFederation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) Forum of Neuroscience in Barcelona, Spain, in July. Hicks was also awarded a Grants-in-Aid of Research fellowship from the research society Sigma Xi.

Hicks is a former student in the
Molecular Medicine and Translational Science Ph.D. graduate training program and conducted regenerative medicine research under the mentorship of Colin Bishop, Ph.D., professor of regenerative medicine.

At the FENS Forum, Hicks presented a poster about her research on nerve development in the mouse embryo. During the trip, she also spoke at the Babraham Institute, Cambridge, United Kingdom. In addition to Bishop, Ronald Oppenheim, Ph.D., Neurobiology and Anatomy, were collaborators on the project.

Hicks’ fellowship from Sigma Xi was for her research on age-related nerve degeneration in mice. The international, multidisciplinary research society awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering.

Through studying a mouse that lacks specific signals for nerve development, Hicks and her mentors hoped to learn more about how to provide nerve function to organs that they build in the lab. The research may also provide clues about the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Hicks is a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology..
