Dr. Andrews instructs fellows in Sim Lab
Internal Medicine/Critical Care Program Director, Drew MacGregor, M.D
Anesthesiology/Critical Care Program Director, William Andrews, MD
The Adult Critical Care Fellowship Programs offered through the Department of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine include the Internal Medicine based Critical Care Medicine program and the Critical Care Anesthesia program. They allow fellows to tailor their education to the components of Critical Care that compliment and expand their previous training. The programs accept physicians who have completed training in Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, and subspecialty training within Internal Medicine. Applicants with other specialty training are also considered. Fellowships continue for one or two years, depending upon Board requirements. Prior graduates of the fellowship programs have come from diverse backgrounds, including Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pulmonary Medicine, Nephrology, and Infectious Disease. Both fellowships are fully ACGME accredited and fulfill all requirements for Board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Rotations
Rotations for fellows in Critical Care include the Neurosurgical, Cardiothoracic, Medical, Trauma, and Pediatric (optional for IM-CCM) Intensive Care Units, with direct interaction and responsibilities for care with attending and resident physicians from these respective services. Elective rotations include the opportunity for time in the Operating Rooms, Coronary Care Unit, , training in transesophageal echocardiography, Toxicology, and other disciplines within Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, a tertiary referral center for most of central and western North Carolina and southern Virginia. Fellows learn about ICU triage, quality improvement (QI) and other administrative functions as they continue in their training.
Education
The Department of Anesthesiology Section on Critical Care provides a wide variety of didactic and other educational conferences, including weekly Core Curriculum lectures, and several monthly conferences - Journal Club, Research Meeting, Critical Care M&M, and Board Review. Each Friday, the section has Critical Care Grand Rounds that is dedicated to topic discussions relevant to critical care that are given by fellows or attending physicians, both from within the Section on Critical Care and faculty outside our department. During Grand Rounds, fellows will have the opportunity to present interesting cases, review the literature, or give prepared topic discussions.
Research
Eachfellow will have between 2 and 4 months per year of fellowship dedicated to the pursuit of scholarly activity under the guidance of one or more of the attending faculty. This may take the form of clinical research, bench research, quality improvement or another suitable project. Two year fellows will have the opportunity to pursue one of two tracks for their second year. These are the Academic Track, in which more time is allotted to ensure successful completion of their scholarly project, and the Clinical Track, in which time outside of core rotations is spent pursuing elective clinical opportunities. It is anticipated that each fellow will be able to complete and submit at least one peer-reviewed abstract or article for publication during the fellowship.
