An Advanced Path: Starting Anesthesiology Residency as a CA-1 in a New Institution

When first entering my CA-1 year after doing my intern year in virginia, I was obviously anxious about my transition. My initial fears of fitting in and being at the appropriate level of training were quickly dismissed. There were multiple meet-and-greet events prior to the new academic year, and everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming with open arms. I quickly found myself feeling right at home. During the first week, there is an "anesthesia boot camp" for all CA-1's which includes tours of the O.R floor, scavenger hunts, etc; as well as a core lecture series that takes place during the first few months to make sure everyone is on the same page academically. The categorical interns spend one rotation in the O.R with anesthesia, but aside from that, it is just as foreign territory to them as it was to me. There is also an amazing support staff in the anesthesia techs, CRNA's, and nurses, who are more than happy to assist or point you in the right direction. I felt as if I truly hit the ground running and the transition could not have been smoother.
