Obstetrical Anesthesia Rotation

The Department of Anesthesiology of Wake Forest School of Medicine provides the anesthesia services for all obstetric and gynecologic procedures performed at Forsyth Medical Center. The anesthesia staff consists of 11 board certified anesthesiologists with special interest and training in obstetrical anesthesiology, twelve certified registered nurse anesthetists, and one to three OB Anesthesia fellows in addition to the usual complement of anesthesia residents and student nurse anesthetists. The Department provides a full range of obstetrical anesthetics including epidurals, spinals, and continuous spinal-epidural anesthetics. All services are provided 24/7 with in-house faculty supervision. Forsyth Medical Center is 3 miles and 10 minutes from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. It is an 822 bed general hospital and home of a new Women's Center that opened in January 2008. This ultra-modern unit contains 24 LDR rooms, two cesarean section rooms, four gynecologic operating rooms, newborn intensive care unit, and all private rooms for postpartum patients. The workload consists of approximately 5,000 regional anesthetics and 2,500 gynecologic anesthetics. In 2011, nearly 6,300 deliveries occurred at the Women’s Center. The cesarean section rate is 29% and 40% of the obstetric patients qualify as high risk. Ninety-five percent of cesarean section patients receive regional anesthesia, and 85% receive regional anesthesia for labor and vaginal delivery.
The large number of deliveries offers an excellent opportunity to provide first class patient care, teaching, and clinical research. In addition to the large clinical load, the anesthesiologists conduct daily didactic sessions that address various aspects of obstetric anesthesiology. House staff are excused from clinical activities to attend them. The Section on Obstetric and Gynecologic Anesthesiology also participates in the didactic series at the University, to include all scheduled lectures, case conferences, and Grand Rounds within the subspecialty of Obstetric Anesthesiology. The section offers one to three, 6-month to 1-year obstetric anesthesia fellowships each year.
