Research Training and Mentoring
The didactic research training described above will be complimented by individualized training provided by a mentor from the Program Faculty. These faculty members will provide guidance and instruction concerning the research project and monitor the trainees progress with the other required elements of the training program. In most cases, a clinical scientist will provide access to, or the means to analyze and collect the clinical research and imaging data that will be needed for the trainee’s research project. This will be accomplished through sponsorship of an ancillary study or substudy to one of the ongoing NIH funded projects described in section 2, or through sponsorship of a de-novo clinical research project to be conducted at Wake Forest School of Medicine or Virginia Tech. Mentors will assist in the formulation of the research question and the development of a research plan with an emphasis on utilizing the newest technologies currently available to image clinical phenotypes, or development of a clinical research question that builds or extends recent imaging advances in the field of cardiovascular disease investigation.
The mentors will also be responsible for individualized support and training in other aspects of career development that are necessary to insure a successful transition of the trainees to independently funded investigators. This will include counseling concerning the ethical conduct of research, exposure to opportunities for networking with other investigators and recognition within their field, helping to develop speaking, writing, and grant preparation skills, acting as an advocate locally and nationally, and giving them a realistic view of what life as an academic investigator entails.
To facilitate the mentoring relationship, the mentors and trainees will draw up a mentoring plan that will include responsibilities of the trainee and the mentors as well as specific milestones and deadlines for completion of steps necessary to prepare the trainee for their future career as an academic investigator. All plans will be submitted to Dr. Hundley and the curriculum Working Group for review and comment. This plan will be drafted at the beginning of each year and reviewed 3 times per year to monitor process. This mentoring plan will be reviewed by the Executive Committee on an annual basis with comments and suggestions forwarded to the mentor team and trainee.
Each trainee will select with their mentor or mentor team a research project supervised by his/her primary mentor. The research program will be formulated such that direct translation of the results to publication is likely, if the data warrant it. All research projects will be designed to require at least 1 year of formulated data acquisition and analysis and result in peer reviewed publications and abstracts suitable for presentation at national or international meetings. If trainees are not meeting timelines, or the data do not warrant translation to the publication within the 2 years, the trainee will be expected to participate in the development of another project associated with an existing research project/trial with his/her mentor.
