Residency Program
The residency program is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge in diagnosis, management and surgical treatment for the thoracic and cardiovascular system. At the completion of the training, the participants should be competent to treat general thoracic, congenital heart and acquired cardiovascular diseases in either a private or academic setting
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at the Wake Forest School of Medicine consists of 2 clinical years following completion of 5 years in an accredited General Surgery Residency resulting in board eligibility.
All of our graduates have gone on to become board certified thoracic surgeons. The most recent site visit by the ACGME was completed in the fall of 2005, from which we received a full 5-year accreditation with commendation for quality of education provided and no citations noted.
We are approved to finish 1 Categorical Chief Resident per year. Our program is fully compliant with the ACGME guidelines regarding resident duty hours. We are committed to providing a unique cardiothoracic surgical training experience that stimulates and prepares our trainees to become future leaders in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
Residency Goals
Development of thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the thorax and cardiovascular system
Development of clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management (operative and non-operative) of congenital heart, general thoracic and acquired cardiovascular diseases
Attainment of technical and surgical expertise in general thoracic, congenital heart and acquired diseases of the cardiovascular system
Experience in basic science investigations including clinical review, clinical outcomes, and basic research
