The Wake Forest University Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) is a student run organization with strong emergency medicine faculty participation and support which enables us to hold monthly clinics, lectures and other events aimed at educating medical students in different aspects of Emergency Medicine.

Events and Opportunities

EMIG holds frequent lunch time lectures on different topics of student interest and most have food provided. We are always looking to have speakers and clinics based on student interests. Please contact us if you have an idea for a talk or clinic. See below for a few examples of what we have done in the past.

What is Emergency Medicine? -  Dr. Manthey gives an overview of what exactly Emergency Medicine is and what EM docs do on a daily basis
Acute Coronary Syndromes - Dr. Hoekstra, chairman of EM, talks about assessment and basic treatment of cardiac problems
EKGs – Dr. Hess teaches the basics of reading EKGs and how to recognize common problems
Emergency Medicine Residency - Dr. Sokolosky, WFBMC’s EM residency director, speaks on what to do to get into an EM residency and what program directors look for in an applicant
Pulmonary Emergencies – Dr. Nicks explains the principals of managing respiratory emergencies
Pediatric Emergency Medicine - Dr. Nadkarni, Peds EM medical director, talks and answers questions about the subspecialty of Pediatric EM
Less Than Lethal Weapons – Dr. Bozeman speaks on one of his research interests – the evolving field of weapons like stun guns, pepper spray, beanbag guns and the injuries that EM physicians will see as these are utilized more in the future.  In addition, a handful of students may volunteer to experience a taser first hand.

Examples of previous clinics

Airway Clinics - One of the most popular clinics - a team of EM doctors instruct students how to intubate and use other airway devices and the BVM (bag valve mask)
Beginner Suture Clinics - Dr. Leonard and Dr. Blumstein instruct students on how to suture and use Dermabond and staple
Advanced Suture Clinic - Dr. Leonard and Dr. Blumstein teach more techniques how to suture
Improvisational Medicine - Dr. McGinnis shows students how to use what they have at their disposal to make splints and other temporary makeshift devices
Simulator Lab - How to run a code and treat Emergencies as they develop
Cadaver Lab - Learn how to do procedures like chest tubes

For third year medical students, if you would like to get a from the department of Emergency Medicine for advice about getting into an EM residency contact Dr. Kim Askew, Undergraduate Medical Education Director.
