VA Medical Center

Wake Forest School of Medicine and the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center have teamed together to form a rotation with exposure to diverse gastroenterology diseases through inpatient consults, outpatient clinic evaluations, and endoscopy.  This rotation is under the direction of Dr. Wayne Zurowski, Chief - Gastroenterology at the VA in Salisbury, NC. The Faculty Clinics typically involve management of common outpatient gastroenterology conditions as would be expected to be seen in an office-based GI practice setting.  The VA patient population often has advanced disease states and comorbidities, and serves as a compliment to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center experience where patients are often seen in referral for tertiary care.  Often these patients have not had extensive GI evaluation in the past and thus give the Fellow a chance to see patients early in their evaluation and treatment regimens.   The endoscopy unit housed in the VA Medical Center exposes fellows to challenging technical procedures such as complex polypectomies that may not be as frequently encountered in the non-VA patient population.  The day-to-day VA GI experience provides a balance between outpatient clinic, inpatient consults and endoscopy.
