The Department of General Surgery at the Wake Forest School of Medicine is committed to educating the next generation of healthcare providers and innovators.  Our faculty members provide outstanding educational experiences to more than 75 residents and fellows in General Surgery by consistently emulating and instilling the characteristics of perseverance, equanimity, compassion, and leadership.  Our department is nationally recognized for excellence in clinical care and research in specialty areas including acute care, colorectal, hepatobiliary, transplant, trauma, burns, pediatric, endocrine, surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery.

Our department is wholeheartedly committed to providing a matchless surgical training experience that stimulates and equips our surgical leaders for tomorrow. The General Surgery Residency Program at the Wake Forest School of Medicine consists of 5 clinical years, with the option for additional training as a Howard Holt Bradshaw Fellow, an endowed research fellowship named in honor of our Department’s first chairman.  On average, graduates of our General Surgery Residency Program complete 1,500 cases in the course of their training.  All of our graduates have gone on to become board certified surgeons.  Upon completion of their training, our residents are well prepared for entry into practice as general surgeons or for further training in a variety of surgical fellowships. Our department also offers advanced fellowships in Surgical Oncology, Acute Care/Trauma/Critical Care, Abdominal Transplant, and Minimally Invasive Surgery.  Fellowships in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery are also available in the Division of Surgical Sciences.  We invite you to review the webpages for each training program to obtain more detailed information on the educational offerings of our department.
