Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowships 

 

  

Dr. Meredith is Director of the Division of Surgical Sciences and Richard T. Myers Professor and Chair of the Department of General Surgery.  Dr. Meredith holds a cross-appointment at the Insti­tute for Regenerative Medicine and a joint appointment as Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics and is the General Surgery Residency Program Director and Chief of Surgery of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.  He is also the Executive Director of the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Dr. Meredith received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine.  A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he completed his residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at The North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Inc.  He completed a fellowship in Trauma/Critical Care at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland, Oregon in 1986.  He joined the Medical Center in 1987 and is a member of numerous hospital, school, and medical center committees.  He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of The Medical Foundation of Wake Forest University Health Sciences and North Carolina Baptist Hospital. 

Dr. Meredith serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery as well as on the Membership Committee for the Halsted Society.  He is Treasurer of the Southern Surgical Association and is the representative to the American Board of Surgery for the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and is a member of the American Surgical Association, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST).  He served as the Medical Director of Trauma Programs of the American College of Surgeons from 2006 through 2010.  He is also the Executive Director for the Childress Pediatric Institute of Pediatric Trauma of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Dr. Meredith is the author of over 115 scientific publications and several book chapters.  In addition, he is a reviewer for Surgical Infections Forum and the Journal of Trauma and serves on the editorial advisory board of the American Journal of Surgery.  In addition, he is the principle investigator on the Cooperative Agreement with Wake Forest School of Medicine and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the establishment of the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN).

Dr. Michael Chang joined the faculty at Wake Forest School of Medicine in 1994 and is a Professor of Surgery with board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  He is the Director of Trauma/Acute Care Surgery.  He did his fellowship training at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  Dr. Chang is also the chair of the North Carolina Committee on Trauma.  Dr. Chang has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications.  Dr. Chang's research interests include resuscitation for post-hemorrhagic shock, management of chronic open abdominal wounds after surgery for trauma, diagnosis and treatment for ventilator- associated pneumonia and diagnosis and management of adrenal insufficiency during post-traumatic multiple organ failure.


  

Dr. Preston Miller joined the faculty at Wake Forest Baptist Medical in 2001 and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery with board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  He did his fellowship training at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine in Memphis.  Dr. Miller has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and directs the Acute Care Surgery research initiative. His clinical interest include lung injury, ventilator associated pneumonia, shock resuscitation, and emergency general surgery. He has presented at national meetings and published multiple manuscriptson these and other subjects.  His current ongoing research projects pertain to pulmonary contusion and ventilator associated pneumonia.

Dr. Jason Hoth joined the faculty at Wake Forest School of Medicine in 2003 and is an Assistant Professor with board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  He did his fellowship training at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.  Dr. Hoth is currently in graduate school at Wake Forest University seeking a PhD in Molecular Medicine. Dr. Hoth has authored many peer-review publicationswith research interests of pulmonary contusion, acute lung injury, and traumatic activation of innate immunity. Dr. Hoth has current awards with the American Lung Association, American College of Surgeons and the NIH for his work with pulmonary contusion studies.

Dr. James Holmes joined the faculty at Wake Forest School of Medicine in 2006 and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery with board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  He did his fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania and Harborview Medical Center (Burn training).  He is also the Director of the Burn Center. He received a cross-appointment with Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine in January 2008. Dr. Holmes has published multiplepeer-reviewed articlesand book chapters on all aspects of burn care. Dr. Holmes is currently active in burn surge capacity and burn disaster management in the State of North Carolina. His current research interests range from all aspects of burn care to patient safety improvements and surgical quality of care initiatives.

Dr. Amy Hildreth joined the faculty at Wake Forest School of Medicine in August 2008 and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery with board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  Dr. Hildreth completed her Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and Residency training at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.  Her research interests include adrenocortical response to trauma and the influence of etomidate on this response as well as the management of the open abdomen.  Dr. Hildreth has published multiple  peer-reviewed articles.   She is also highly involved in resident/fellow education and ICU quality initiatives as the chair of the ICU Surgical Services Improvement Committee.

 Dr. Nathan Mowery joined the faculty at Wake Forest School of Medicine in July 2008 and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery with board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  He completed his Trauma/Critical Care Fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. His research interests include hyperglycemia and stress insulin resistance, physiologic variability and its expression using dense data capture and process improvement and protocol development in the ICU.  Dr. Mowery has authored numerous  peer-reviewed articles.  He also is involved in improving the initial assessment and management of injured patients during the Emergency Department phase of care.

Dr. Shayn Martin joined the faculty at Wake Forest School of Medicine in July 2009 and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery with board certification in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  He is the Director of Surgical Critical Care and the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.  He completed his Trauma/Critical Care Fellowship at Wake Forest School of Medicine.  His research interests include cardiovascular resuscitation, trauma systems, bioinformatics, ICU systems and quality processes, surgical infections, and automobile crash biomechanics.  Dr. Martin has authored numerous  peer-reviewed articles.  He is also involved with the Wake Forest School of Medicine Crash Injury Research Engineering Network (CIREN) program.
