Transition to Practice Program

Transition to Practice Program Fellowship

The Transition to Practice
Associate Training Program

Background:  The Transition to Practice (TTP) Program in General Surgery was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). It is a program for surgeons who are leaving residency and entering into the practice of general surgery. It  is intended to help fill perceived gaps in training today and will help with the transition to independent practice in general surgery. Program participants will:

  • Obtain enhanced autonomous experience in broad-based general surgery
  • Increase competence and confidence in clinical matters
  • Gain exposure to aspects of practice management
  • Experience mentoring with notable practicing surgeons
  • Participate in experiential learning tailored to individual needs

Further information is available at the ACS website http://www.facs.org/ttp/

Program:  The Wake Forest University TTP Program is a one year program offered to those who are finishing or have finished an ACGME accredited general surgery training program. We offer additional training in general surgery including emergency general surgery and trauma as well as aspects of minimally invasive surgery, oncologic surgery and endocrine surgery. Experiences in surgical critical care, obstetrics/gynecology, and surgical practice in underserved international settings are also offered. The aim of the program is to prepare graduates for the practice of general surgery whether it be in private practice, an academic medical center, or an international setting. The program is not designed to provide remediation but to provide an environment for the development and maturation of already excellent surgical skills. It is expected that graduates will be highly sought after by those recruiting general surgeons in the private, academic, or international practice arenas.
