Typical Three-Year Experience

HO-I

- Composed of 13 four-week blocks.
- Interns have 4-5 non-ward rotations:
- Acute Care Clinic: Located at the Downtown Health Plaza (DHP) or the Outpatient Department (OPD)
- Geriatrics/Palliative Care: Two weeks geriatric clinics, home care visits, and nursing home visits and two weeks of palliative care consultations and Hospice rounds
- Ambulatory Subspecialty Block: An ambulatory experience consisting of exposure to general and/or subspecialty clinics based on an intern’s interest as well as exposure to community resources to better serve our patients. If interested, interns may dedicate approximately 50% of this block to start a research project.

- VA Outpatient Block
- During ambulatory (non-ward) blocks, Tuesday and Thursday mornings are dedicated to seminars on advanced interviewing and communication skills, professionalism, an introduction to Evidence-Based Medicine, and an introduction to the systems of health care and quality improvement.
- Vacation: Interns receive six days of holiday leave over Christmas or New Year's and two other weeks of their choosing (during ambulatory rotations or the ED rotation).

- Each year composed of 13 four-week blocks.
- For HO II’s & III’s, the schedule is designed to alternate “ward” and “non-ward” rotations.
- Rotation key:
- Hospitalist: Residents gain experience on our Academic Hospitalist service (Gen Med E) working with Wake Forest Internal Medicine Physicians (WFIP).
- ACE Ward (Acute Care for the Elderly): Residents work with our geriatricians caring for elderly patients admitted to the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging.
- Elective: Self-designed opportunity in the HOII/HOIII years to improve skills in general medicine clinics, subspecialty clinics and non-internal medicine ambulatory settings (GYN, Urology, ENT, Ortho, Radiology, etc.). Other electives include research, evidence based medicine, and practice based improvement modules.
- VA: Winston-Salem Outpatient Veterans Clinic
- ROC: Resident On Call (upper level night float)
- ED/AIM: 2 weeks as admitting triage officer in ED and 2 weeks general internal medicine consults
- Board Study: Focused board preparation
- Vacation: Residents receive six days of holiday leave over either Christmas or New Year's and three additional weeks each year (1 week during an Elective and 2 weeks paired with Board Study).
