Molecular Pathology Student Awards and Honors 2001 to 2010

Nearly all of the students in the Molecular Pathology Program graduate with several peer-reviewed publications to their credit, and most also attend and present their research at regional and national meetings in their areas of expertise. 

2011-2012 

2010:

  •  Kelly Ethun, DVM, was awarded a travel stipend to attend Endocrine Society's 92nd Annual Meeting, San Diego, CA, June 19-22, 2010 where, on Endocrine Society Trainee Day at ENDOC 2010, she presented  "Effects of Combination Therapy with Bazedoxifene and Conjugated Equine Estrogens on the Endometrial and Vaginal Epithelium of Surgically Postmenopausal Monkeys."
  •   Philip MacArthurwas awarded an AHA Mid-Atlantic Predoctoral Grant for July, 2010 through June 2012.  His research project is called "Mechanism of Neutral Lipid Translocation Across the Endoplasmic Reticulum Membrane."
  •   Lin Jia - Early Career Investigator Travel Stipend Award for poster presentation "Dietary cholesterol restores diet-induced weight gain in mice lacking the intestinal cholesterol transporter Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1)," at the Kern Aspen Lipid Research  Conference, Aspen, CO, August 21-24, 2010.
  •   Caleb Lord - Early Career Investigator Travel Stipend Award for poster presentation  "Knockdown of CGI-58 in Mice Alters the Systemic Response to Endotoxin and Is Associated with Increased Adipose Macrophage Infiltration," at the Kern Aspen Lipid Research  Conference, Aspen, CO, August 21-24, 2010.
  •  Shunxing Rong - Early Career Investigator Award of Excellence for poster presentation "Macrophage 12/15 Lipoxygenase Expression Increases Plasma Lipid Level and Exacerbates the Development of Atherosclerosis," at the Kern Aspen Lipid Research  Conference, Aspen, CO, August 21-24, 2010. 
  •  Kanwardeep Bura won 1st Place (predoctoral category) in the poster presentations at the South East Lipid Research Conference (SELRC), Pine Mountain, GA, Oct. 7-10, 2010. His  poster was entitled "Mice Overexpressing Intestinal SR-BI have Normal Cholesterol Absorption and Fecal Sterol Loss."   Mr. Bura's mentor is Dr. J. Mark Brown, Lipid Sciences.
  •  Tian Lan gave a poster presentation at the South East Lipid Research Conference at Callaway Gardens Resort, Pine Mountain, GA, Oct. 7-10, 2010, entitled "Inactivation of the Basolateral Transporter Ostα-Ostβ Alters Bile Acid Homeostasis via the FXR-FGF15 Pathway"  
  •  Dr. Jenna Betters, postdoctoral fellow in Pathology/Lipid Sciences, won 1st Place in the postdoctoral poster competitionat the South East Lipid Research Conference at Callaway Gardens Resort, Pine Mountain, GA, Oct. 7-10, 2010. Her poster was entitled "Selective Inactivation of CGI-58 in Liver Causes Hepatic Steatosis Without Insulin Resistance"  

The following graduate students and postdoctoral fellows presented at the Synergy Symposium: "Lipotoxicity Across the Translational Research Symposium," hosted by Wake Forest University Translational Science Institute, Friday, April 23, 2010, at the Wachovia Center, Winston-Salem, NC: 

  •  Lolita Forrest, graduate student in Molecular Medicine Program mentored by Dr. John Parks, Director of the Molecular Pathology Program, presented a poster entitled "Determining the Hypotriglyceridemic Effects of Echium Oil."
  •   Caleb Lord presented a poster entitled "Knockdown of CGI-58 Dissociates Hepatic Steatosis From Insulin Resistance: A Novel Role for CGI-58 in Inflammatory Signaling." Co-authors were Jenna Betters, Yinyan Ma, John Melchior, Janet K. Sawyer, Matthew A. Davis, Kathryn Kelley, Ramesh Shah, Martha D. Wilson, Bingzhong Xue, Hang Shi, Richard G. Lee, Rosanne M. Crooke, Mark J. Graham, Gerald I. Shulman, Michael Fessler, H. Alex Brown, Dawn Brasaemle, Liqing Yu, and J. Mark Brown.

The following graduate students and postdoctoral fellows presented at the Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology (ATVB) Meetings in San Francisco, CA, April 8-10, 2010. 

  •  Soonkyu Chung, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, gave an oral presentation entitled "Hepatocyte Specific Knockout of ABCA1 Alleviates Liver Lipid Accumulation but Exacerbates Hepatic Insulin Resistance & Inflammation." Dr. Chung was the recipient of "The Young investigator Travel Award ($1,000). 
  •  Jeongmin Seo, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, presented a poster entitled "Effect of Apolipoprotein M on HDL-Cholesterol Concentration and Subclass Distribution in Human ApoA-I Transgenic Mice." 
  •  Shaila Bhat, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, presented a poster entitled "Biosynthesis of Nascent HDLs by ABCA1 : What Does Lipid Composition Tell Us About Their Formation?" 
  •  Ashley Wilhelm, Graduate Student, presented a poster  entitled "Apolipoprotein A-I Improves the Regulatory T Cell Response in Autoimmune LDLr-/-, ApoA-I-/- Mice."
  •  Tam M. Nguyen, Graduate Student, gave an oral presentation entitled "Acyl-CoA Cholesterol:Acyl Transferase 2 (ACAT2) Promotes Intestinal Cholesterol Absorption As Measured by Thoracic Lymph Duct Cannulation."
  •  Xin Bin, Graduate Student, presented a poster entitled "Hepatic ABCA1 Deficiency Does not Significantly Influence Susceptibility to Atherosclerosis in C57BL/6 LDLr-/- mice."
  •  Lolita Forrest, Graduate Student in Molecular Medicine Graduate Program and presented a poster entitled "Determining the Hypotriglyceridemic Effect of Echium Oil."  Lolita is mentored by Dr. John S. Parks, Director, Molecular Pathology Graduate Program.
  •  Amanda Brown, Graduate Student in the Molecular Medicine Graduate Program, attended the Deuel Conference on Lipids, Dana Point, CA, March 2-5, 2010. She presented a poster entitled "Dietary Omega-3 Fatty Acids Promote Alternative Activation of Macrophages." Amanda also won a travel award to attend the meeting. She is mentored by Dr. John S. Parks, Director, Molecular Pathology Graduate Program.  

 Tam Nguyen  and Philip MacArthur were winners at the Tenth Annual Graduate Student and Postdoc Research Day and Spring Hot Topics Community Forum held March 23, 2010 at Bridger Field House, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC. This research forum brings together students and faculty from programs and departments across all schools and colleges of Wake Forest University. In recent years, close to 100 student posters have been presented. Tam  and Philip won First Runner-Up (Integrated Science).  Tam's poster presentation entitled "Acyl-CoA Cholesterol:Acyl Transferase 2 (ACAT2) Promotes Intestinal Cholesterol Absorption As Measured by Thoracic Lymph Duct Cannulation." Philip's poster was entitled: "Alternative splicing attenuates transgenic expression directed by the ApoE promoter-enhancer based expression vector, pLIV11."


Shunxing Rong won a travel scholarship to attend the 2010 Keystone Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology held at Fairmont Banff Springs, Banff, Alberta February 12-17, 2010.  His presentation and abstract were both entitled: "High Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid (PUFA) Diet Unmasks Role of 12/15 Lipoxygenase in Lipid Metabolism."

 

2009:

  •  Jenna Betters, PhD - 1st Place for Outstanding Poster Presentation (postdoctora category) at the South East Lipid Research Conference, Pine Mountain, GA September 24-27, 2009. Her presentation was entitled "Hepatic CGI-58 Promotes Ketogenesis."
  •  Lin Jia and Ashley Wilhelm are winners of Early Career Investigator Travel Stipend Awards to attend the Kern Aspen Lipid Conference, Given Institute, Aspen, CO, August 22-25, 2009.   Lin Jia will present her abstract entitled "NPC1L1 Deficiency in Mice Prevents High Fat Diet-induced Fatty Liver by Attenuating Increases in Plasma Insulin and Hepatic Lipogenesis" and Ashley Wilhelm will present her abstract entitled Apolipoprotein A-I: a Common Link Between Inflammation, Atherosclerosis and Autoimmunity."
  •  Mingxia Liu - Poster Presentation: "Defective Vesicle Trafficking is Associated with Increased VLDL Triglyceride Secretion in Hepatocyte-Specific ABCA1 Knockout Mice," Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Annual Conference, Washington, DC, April 29-May 1, 2009.
