Overview of Fellowship Program

The two-year clinical nephrology fellowship program involves intensive experience and instruction in all areas of clinical nephrology. Fellows rotate through five clinical services as well as a sixth clinical/research elective rotation. The Acute Consult Service (Consult A) is an intensive inpatient consultative nephrology service which exposes the fellows to all aspects of clinical nephrology and hypertension experienced in a hospital setting. The ESRD/Transplant Consult Service (Consult B) is committed to providing excellent consultative care to ESRD and kidney transplant patients hospitalized on non-nephrology services.  The Renal Ward Service provides the fellows with experience serving as the primary inpatient care provider managing a variety of patients with ESRD and CKD, including those with a history of kidney transplantation.  The Outpatient Service gives the fellows experience in working up the majority of the new patient referrals to our faculty clinics.  These patients tend to have a broad range of conditions, including diabetic nephropathy and other common causes of chronic kidney disease, as well as some of the rarer types of glomerulonephritis, as well as kidney transplant patients and patients with refractory hypertension.   The Outpatient Transplant Service provides experience in co-managing kidney and pancreas transplant patients with our abdominal organ transplant surgical team, as well as performing pre-transplant evaluations of patients with CKD.  The Dialysis/Elective rotation provides fellows the opportunity to pursue clinical or research electives under the supervision of Wake Forest faculty, including but not limited to research related to dialysis, CKD, genetics of CKD, or in-depth clinical work in the fields of interventional nephrology, kidney transplantation, and renal pathology.
