Description of leadership and mentoring accomplishment(s):
Dr. Geiger has a long-standing interest in and commitment to leadership and mentoring. During her career, she has completed a variety of leadership programs, including the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar and the Center for Creative Leadership’s Leadership Development Program. Dr. Geiger has led single and multiple site research projects, and helps train new investigators for leadership roles within the Cancer Research Network. She also has served on multiple local and national committees, including current participation in the Executive Committees of both the Society for Epidemiologic Research and the Third North American Congress of Epidemiology. Locally, she currently co-directs the Graduate Program in Clinical and Population Translational Sciences. Over the past ten years Dr. Geiger has mentored 11 individuals, including six physicians; all of whom continue to flourish in their chosen career paths. Her leadership efforts and skills were previously recognized by 1996 and 1998 Spotlight on Leadership Awards from the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. While leadership and mentoring are rarely remunerated, Dr. Geiger believes scientists have an obligation to these activities and derives substantial personal satisfaction from her efforts.
