We would like to recognize Dr. Joseph Grzywacz, as an outstanding mentor in the WHCOE Mentoring Program! Dr. Grzywacz, former Professor in Family and Community Medicine and PHS, Epidemiology & Prevention, joined the WHCOE Mentoring Program as a mentor in 2008. Since then he has mentored three women junior faculty, one of them receiving a K23 award, another recently promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and the third was recently promoted to Section Head.

One of Dr. Grzywacz's mentees had this to say about him: "I don't think I can capture all that (Dr. Grzywacz) has done for me. He helped me pick a career path and helped me with the appropriate strategies for career direction. When it came time for promotion packet assembly, (Dr. Grzywacz) worked tirelessly with me…reading every page, looking at every diagram, helped me present my data and gave very…constructive feedback. (Dr. Grzywacz) is not in my field and asked a lot of insightful questions and provided uninterrupted time to meet.  (Dr. Grzywacz) acted as a sympathetic sounding board for my concerns…and helped me see how to turn my clinical work into scholarly output."

In addition to his professorial duties, Dr. Grzywacz also served as the Associate Director for the Research Center for Worker Health and was the winner of the Mid-Career Investigator in Clinical Sciences award in 2009. Dr. Grzywacz's research interests centered mainly on work-family interface, socioeconomic and racial disparities in health and the organization of work.  Within the context of his research work, from 2007 to 2011, Dr. Grzywacz mentored seven students through the WHCOE Undergraduate Internship Program, a program designed to expose undergraduate students to research in women's health. A number of Dr. Grzywacz's students opted to work with him well beyond the required one semester.

Thank you, Dr. Grzywacz, for being an exemplary mentor!
