Fellowship Application Process

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship program is a three year training program. There are three approved fellow positions.

Applications are only accepted through the Web-Based Electronic Fellowship Application Service (ERAS). Please note that any questions regarding ERAS should be directed to your Dean's Office/Office of Student Activities or the ERAS web site.

Application deadline will be May 31, 2017. Completed ERAS application should include the following:

The ERAS common application form

Three letters of recommendation, two to include letters from your current Chair and Program Director

Official medical school transcript

Personal statement

Current CV

COMLEX or USMLE Step 1 & 2 (CS and CK) scores
*Note that passing scores for BOTH step 1 and step 2 (CK and CS) are required in order to start residency; however, only step 1 scores are required for the application process. However, having both scores available for the application process can be very helpful.

Specific Eligibility Criteria Includes

Applicants who are graduates of U.S. medical schools must have completed at least four years of approved residency training in obstetrics and gynecology to be eligible for the Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship. 

Graduates of Canadian medical schools must present evidence that they have equivalent postgraduate training.

Candidates must be eligible to obtain Board Certification from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Candidates are to perform the essential functions of the specialty and meet the standards of the curriculum, applicants should possess these qualities: 

  • Ability to learn and function in a variety of settings
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Emotional stability and maturity
  • Empathy for others
  • Physical and mental stamina
  • Sound judgment

Successful candidates would also exhibit strong qualifications for Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Fellowship is open to U.S. citizens, permanent U.S. immigrants and international applicants as follows: 

  • Open to qualified graduates of accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools.
  • All graduates from medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to qualify for admission.
  • Applicants must upload scanned copies of transcripts from each graduate school, dental school and medical school attended and must also provide certified or notarized English translations of documents originally written in a language other than English. Applicants who receive an appointment need to request an official transcript from their school(s).
  • Successful candidates must fulfill all applicable licensure eligibility requirements before starting a Fellowship.
  • A preadmission health review and current immunization record are required prior to starting

Prospective fellows must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.


Invitations for interviews will be sent to you by e-mail from our Fellowship Coordinator, Marla Love. The evening before is a short presentation by the Program Director and social event. A typical interview day generally lasts from 7:30 am-4:00 pm and includes an introduction to the program from the Program Director, Assistant Director, Vice Chair and Chair, personal interviews with the Program Director and Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) faculty, lunch and informal time with other MFM faculty and staff, and a tour of the medical center and labor and delivery. Applicants will be notified of all final details and locations closer to interview dates below.

The Piedmont Triad International Airport located in Greensboro, NC is less than 30 minutes away from Winston-Salem. Charlotte Douglas Airport is 1 ½ hours from Winston-Salem and Raleigh-Durham is 2 hours away.
