Right in the heart of Winston-Salem, runners and bikers can enjoy the wooded 7-mile trail around
Salem Lake or a more historical view through the
Winston-Salem Strollway that winds through the downtown area at Old Salem. There are
74 parks in the area that offer a variety of sporting activities including playgrounds, tennis courts, and basketball courts.
If you’re a hiker and/or a camper, just an hour’s drive is
Pilot Mountain or
Hanging Rock State Park for hiking for an afternoon or camping for the weekend. Also
Grandfather Mountain, home of the Mile High Swinging Bridge, is a unique adventure.
For relaxing with the sand in your toes, Winston-Salem is close in proximity to beaches from the
Outer Banks and Kitty Hawk, home of the Wright Brothers Memorial, to Wilmington with the
USS North Carolina Battleship to 6 lighthouses located throughout the east coast of the state. On Shackleford Banks you will find wild horses and some of the most perfect shells while camping in the wilderness with only what you bring over by boat.
Interested in arts? Winston-Salem is home to the
Stevens Center and
Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts which hold live performances throughout the year in conjunction with the North Carolina School of the Arts and the
River Run International Film Festival each spring. The
Downtown Arts District offers unique locally made crafts and shopping experiences.
For the sport fan,
Wake Forest Football and Basketball games along with The
Dash Baseball games take place right here in the heart of Winston-Salem. The
Charlotte Motor Speedway, just a little over an hour away, hosts the Coca Cola 600 each May and the Bank of America 500 each October.
