Annual Report 2014 - 2015

CLINICAL: For fiscal year 2015, the Department of Ophthalmology had 2,417 cases.  We had over 76,000 visits, with work RVUs at 150,374. In the past year, the Ophthalmology Department recorded over 100,000 encounters at our on-site and off-site locations including Optical Services. Cumulatively, Ophthalmology faculty consistently produced wRVU’s well above the 75th percentile.  Quality of Care and Service Excellence continue to be the focus of all Ophthalmology services. To improve access, operations, training and program development are prominent in both faculty and staff development plans is the overriding goal.

The Wake Forest Baptist Health (WFBH) Eye Center continued its longstanding support of the organizational clinical mission by expanding critical Pediatric Services and Ophthalmology Services at our Davie Medical Center location in Bermuda Run, NC, and in October 2015 we look forwarding to adding Oculoplastic services as well.  Our satellite program in Lexington, NC with Davidson Eye Associates continues to flourish with retina services being provided by Dr. Vishak John.  This satellite practice has greatly enhanced access for patients in the western area extending into Salisbury and Charlotte in need of specialized retina care. It has created additional clinical and surgical opportunities for both the department and the institution.

ACADEMIC: For fiscal year 2015, The Department of Ophthalmology has 9 residents. The Academic Teaching mission has also been strong and the residency program has had a very successful year. Three residents will graduate from the training program; Dr. Bradley Bowen and Dr. Daniel Nelson will be joining Ophthalmology Practices and Dr. Nathan Haines will be pursuing a Retina Fellowship in Colorado. The experience for all nine of our residents continues to be excellent with patient numbers and surgery numbers in the highest percentiles. For example, the three residents completing the program have each done approximately 200 cataract surgeries, with 86 being the minimum and 120 being the approximate mean nationwide.  One-third of the residents' training is at the Veterans Administration Hospital. This type of experience has given the residents a broad scope with regard to healthcare systems, and an opportunity to become accustomed to different healthcare administrations and documentation.  Academically the residents have done well, and in fact this year’s Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP) scores have been perhaps the highest ever with 1/3rd scoring above the 95th percentile and all scoring better than the mean.

With our three accredited Fellowship Programs, Retina, Cornea and Oculoplastics, we are able to offer a total of four fellowship positions at the WFBH Eye Center.  In addition, they hosted the 32nd Annual Wake Forest University Eye Center Conference and Alumni Day on April 17, 2015. The program was attended by over 100 ophthalmologists from around the country.

Wake Forest Baptist Eye Center continues to be a national leader in Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) by a recent invention used to facilitate the surgery making it faster and safer. The EndoSaver, invented by Keith A. Walter, MD gained CE Mark (European Union approval in April, 2010) and FDA approval as the EndoSerter in the US in January, 2011. It has quickly become a "must have" instrument for many of the top US corneal surgeons. Currently the EndoSerter has gained more than 10% of the market share in the first 6 months after approval and will likely rise to 50% in the next 1-2 years.
