Orthopaedic Surgery

Program Director: Ethan R. Wiesler, MD

Program Outline: This rotation is for fourth year students interested in gaining significant experience in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery. During four weeks of rotation, the students will function as interns on one of the four orthopaedic teams. Selection of teams are on a first-come, first-served basis. The teams include: 1) trauma / spine; 2) upper extremity; 3) joint reconstruction / tumor; and 4) pediatrics / sports. The students will take call every fourth night and be exposed to all aspects of clinical orthopaedics including the operating room, out-patient clinics, in-patient care and the emergency room. Every effort is made to be responsive to the student's particular area of interest whenever possible. Each student will be expected to attend clinic and the operating room during the rotation.

Objectives: To acquaint the student with:

  • The scope and character of the practice of orthopaedic surgery
  • The specific encountered diseases and types of surgery performed in the various sub-specialty areas of orthopaedic surgery
  • Techniques in the care of fractures with emphasis on the use of internal and external fixation as well as the selective use of casting and traction
  • The scope and character of the practice of orthopaedic surgery with particular emphasis on the care of scoliosis and spine deformity patients, and to provide an opportunity for exposure to training in adult spine trauma and spine conditions.

Prerequisites: Units I-V
Length of Program: 4 weeks
Maximum Number of Students: 4
When Offered: All rotations (vacation is discouraged during this rotation)
Report to: Administrative Chief Resident at 5:45 a.m. in the study area on Fourth Floor, Watlington Hall, who will aid the student in choosing a faculty advisor.

Program Outline: This rotation is designed for the student who is NOT planning to pursue Orthopaedic Surgery as a career. During the rotation, the student is assigned to one or two specific Orthopaedic attending physicians for a one or two-week period. The student will accompany the attending physician to all outpatient clinics and to the operating room. No in-patient responsibilities or on-call coverage is required. Attendance at all orthopaedic conferences is mandatory.

Objective:

  • To provide the student with exposure to musculoskeletal problems
  • To provide the student with a basic knowledge in the care of orthopaedic fractures and diseases with emphasis on the use of appropriate casting and traction techniques.

Prerequisites: Wake Forest School of Medicine students only; Units I-V and the approval of the individual faculty member (student must select & contact faculty member for approval)
Length of Program: 2 weeks
Maximum Number of Students: 2 per month
When Offered: All rotations (vacation is discouraged during this elective)
Report to: Individual faculty member as discussed when approval is obtained.
