Academic Requirements

Academic Requirements for Residents

  1. Write and submit a minimum of one paper per year of sufficient quality to be accepted to a peer reviewed journal. Paper submission is the initial requisite, although follow-up revisions to allow acceptance are to be carried out in timely fashion (<3 months). Papers must be co-authored with a faculty member and reviewed by the faculty co-author and residency committee prior to submission. For Otolaryngology residents (PGY 2 and PGY 4) the paper(s) is to be submitted to the residents committee by July 1 of the next year; for chief residents by April 1 of the chief year. Residents not meeting the deadline will be off surgical service until the paper is written and submitted to the residency committee.
  2. Prepare assigned conferences dictated by the conference schedule.
  3. Papers to be presented at National Meetings are to be presented to the entire department at a Wednesday morning conference no later than one week before the meeting to allow for feedback and review by the appropriate faculty. 
  4. Completion of Home Study Course and Patient of the Month by deadlines dictated in course. Residents are required to complete the House Staff Common Curriculum by the end of their residency training. (See General Competencies)
  5. Completion of General Competencies according to year of training.
