Hematology and Oncology Specialty Residency

WFBH offers an ASHP-accredited, one-year, specialty residency in hematology and oncology at an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.  The residency is designed to provide the resident with a broad range of hematology and oncology experiences in a progressive environment committed to pharmaceutical care and education.  These experiences combine learning opportunities in a multidisciplinary setting for both inpatients and outpatients.  Two positions are available each year.

Rotations

  • Members of the pharmacy staff participate in daily patient care rounds, therapeutic drug monitoring, medication reconciliation, patient education, providing drug information, and in-service education.
  • Flexibility allows each resident to tailor experiences to meet his/her individual interests and career goals.
  • One month rotations that can be made into blocks of multiple months
  • In July, the resident will spend time learning order verification and distribution system for chemotherapy patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • December will be left open as a research and administration month.
  • The remaining nine rotations are broken into six required rotations and four elective rotations.
  • All rotations are precepted by qualified clinical specialists

Presentations

Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program. Presentation opportunities include:

  • Drug class presentations
  • Disease state topic discussions
  • Pharmacy Grand Rounds
  • Pharmacy Department journal club
  • Pharmacy Department case presentations 
  • Didactic lectures at Campbell University School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (required), Wake Forest University School of Medicine Physician Assistant program and Nurse Anesthesia program (optional)  
  • Staff development presentations 
  • Poster presentation at a national meeting (such as ASHP Midyear or HOPA) 
  • Lay Public Education

Precepting

  • By precepting students, the hematology and oncology resident will have the opportunity to refine his/her teaching skills and further deepen his/her own clinical knowledge base.
  • WFBMC is a rotation site primarily for students from Wingate University and Campbell University School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (approximately 160 student months per year) 
  • Precepting responsibilities are available on many rotations 
  • For those residents who have not received a teaching certificate, they may complete the teaching certificate
    program at WFBMC

Projects

The oncology resident will have mentoring from pharmacy preceptors as they complete:

  • A minimum of one independent research project with a manuscript ready for publication
  • One drug use evaluation
  • Drug monograph completion for presentation at P & T 
  • Treatment plan review and build for use in the WFBMC electronic medical record system
