Pediatric Specialty Residency

Wake Forest Baptist Health (WFBH) offers a PGY2 Pediatric Specialty Residency at Brenner Children’s Hospital.  As one of the most outstanding patient care, teaching, and research facilities in the nation, Brenner Children’s Hospital is committed to the special health care needs of children and adolescents. The one-year pediatric residency position is designed to provide the resident with a broad range of pediatric learning experiences in a progressive, academic setting that takes a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric patient care.

Rotations/Clinical Experiences

Clinical experiences are available in the following areas and flexibility in scheduling allows residents to tailor their learning opportunities. 

Core Rotations

  • Pediatric Critical Care
  • Neonatology
  • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
  • General Pediatrics
  • Pediatric Practice Management
  • Pediatric Ambulatory Care
  • Practice Experience

Elective Clinical Rotations or Experiences

  • Pediatric Nephrology 
  • Pediatric Cardiology BCH Photo
  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases
  • Pediatric Trauma Code Participation

Scheduling  

  • 12, one month rotations
  • In July, the resident will spend time learning the distribution system in the Pediatric Satellite
  • December is designated as a research and administration month
  • Practice Management and Practice Experience are longitudinal rotations

Presentations

Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program.  Anticipated presentation experiences include  

  • Teaching Certificate Program
  • 1-hour ACPE-accredited Pharmacy Grand Rounds  
  • Journal club 
  • Case conference presentation
  • Monthly pediatric topic discussions
  • Platform Presentation at Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group  (PPAG)
  • Lecture to the Physician Assistants Program students at WFBH
  • Lecture to Campbell University School of Pharmacy students
  • UHC poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting


Precepting 
By precepting students, the Pediatric resident will refine their teaching skills and further enhance their own clinical knowledge base.  WFBH is a rotation site primarily for students from Campbell University and Wingate Schools of Pharmacy.

Projects  
The pediatric resident will complete/participate in the following projects:

  • Independent research project
  • Manuscript for publication
  • Protocol(s) implementation development and implementation
  • Pediatric quarterly newsletter publications
  • Pharmacy volunteer at Camp Victory Junction
