PGY2 Advanced Practice Residencies

Pediatric Specialty Residency

Wake Forest Baptist Health (WFBH) offers a one-year PGY2 Pediatric Residency. WFBH’s Brenner Children’s Hospital is dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, quality improvement, research and advocacy while being focused on the special needs of children and families. The residency program is designed to provide the resident with a broad range of pediatric learning experiences in a progressive, academic setting that takes a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric patient care. One position is available each year.

Brenner Children's Hospital 


Clinical experiences are available in the following areas and flexibility in scheduling allows residents to tailor their learning opportunities. Monthly rotations are a four-week experience. July is reserved for orientation and December is reserved for research work and attending the Midyear Clinical Meeting. Resident is required to complete a research project and a case report with submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

  • Pediatric Nephrology 
  • Pediatric Cardiology 
  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Antibiotic Support Team
  • Repeat of any core rotation
  • Other pediatric-focused electives may be able to be developed based on the resident’s specific interests 


  • Pediatric Practice Management
  • Pediatric Bowel Rehabilitation for Improved Digestion, Growth and Elimination (BRIDGE) Clinic
  • Pediatric Transitions of Care through the North Carolina Community Care Network (longitudinal)
  • Staffing and Code Response
  • Research 

Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program. Anticipated presentation experiences include the following: 

  • Teaching Certificate Program
  • 1-hour ACPE-accredited Pharmacy Grand Rounds  
  • Pediatric Grand Rounds
  • Journal club 
  • Bi-monthly pediatric pharmacy presentations
  • Platform Presentation at Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG)
  • Lecture to Wake Forest Physician Assistants students
  • Lecture to Campbell University School of Pharmacy students

The pediatric resident will complete/participate in the following projects:

  • Independent research project
  • Manuscript for publication
  • Protocol(s) implementation development and implementation
  • Pediatric quarterly newsletter publications
  • Pharmacy volunteer at Camp Victory Junction

By precepting students, residents will refine their teaching skills and further deepen their own clinical knowledge base.  WFBH is a rotation site for students from Campbell University School of Pharmacy and Wingate University School of Pharmacy. Departmental Preceptor Development is offered to the resident.  On-site teaching opportunities are available at High Point University School of Pharmacy and Campbell School of Pharmacy. Teaching certificate is offered.

Teaching Certificate
At the beginning of the year, the Pediatric resident will have the opportunity to enroll in a teaching certificate program sponsored by WFBH Department of Pharmacy. This program is intended to develop the resident’s knowledge, skills, and abilities to teach effectively in a wide variety of settings. The certificate program also aims to enhance the resident’s ability to provide constructive evaluations as well as incorporate feedback into their own teaching. Many of the residency-required presentations qualify as experiences that help the resident complete the certificate program.

Residents are required to help fulfill the department’s staffing needs. Each resident will staff every fifth weekend, one evening shift a month, and two holidays a year.
