Pediatric Specialty Residency

Wake Forest Baptist Health (WFBH) offers a one-year PGY2 Pediatric Specialty Residency at Brenner Children’s Hospital.  WFBH's Brenner Children's Hospital is dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, quality improvement, research, and advocacy while being focused on the special needs of children and families. The residency program is designed to provide the resident with a broad range of pediatric learning experiences in a progressive, academic setting that takes a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric patient care. One position is available each year.

Brenner Children's Hospital 

Rotations

Clinical experiences are available in the following areas and flexibility in scheduling allows residents to tailor their learning opportunities. Monthly rotations are a four-week experience.

  • Pediatric Critical Care
  • Neonatology
  • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
  • General Pediatrics
  • Pediatric Practice Management
  • Pediatric Ambulatory Care

Elective Clinical Rotations or Experiences

  • Pediatric Nephrology 
  • Pediatric Cardiology BCH Photo
  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases
  • Pediatric Trauma Code Participation
  • Pediatric Surgery

Presentations

Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program.  Anticipated presentation experiences include the following: 

  • Teaching Certificate Program
  • 1-hour ACPE-accredited Pharmacy Grand Rounds  
  • Journal club 
  • Case conference presentation
  • Monthly pediatric topic discussions
  • Platform Presentation at Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG)
  • Lecture to the Physician Assistants Program students at WFBH
  • Lecture to Campbell University School of Pharmacy students
  • UHC poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting

Projects
  
The pediatric resident will complete/participate in the following projects:

  • Independent research project
  • Manuscript for publication
  • Protocol(s) implementation development and implementation
  • Pediatric quarterly newsletter publications
  • Pharmacy volunteer at Camp Victory Junction

Precepting 

By precepting students, residents will refine their teaching skills and furhter deepen their own clinical knowledge base. WFBH is a rotation site for students from Campbell University School of Pharmacy and Wingate University School of Pharmacy. Departmental Preceptor Development is offered to the resident. On-site teaching opportunities are available tat High Point University School of Pharmacy and Campbell School of Pharmacy. Teaching certificate is offered. Pediatric residents will refine their teaching skills and further enhance their own clinical knowledge base. WFBH is a rotation site primarily for students from Campbell University and Wingate Schools of Pharmacy.

Scheduling

  • 12 one-month rotations
  • In July, the resident will spend time learning the distribution system in the Pediatric Satellite Pharmacy
  • December is designated as a research and administration month
  • Practice Management and Ambulatory Care are longitudinal rotations

Staffing

  • The resident will staff every third weekend
  • The resident will work two holidays

Leadership Development

  • Longitudinal practice management
  • Committee participation
  • Monthly meetings with Jen Tryon, PharmD, AVP/CPO
  • ASHP Visiting Leaders Program - Quarterly leadership development seminars and breakout session with nationally acclaimed pharmacy leaders
