Pediatric Specialty Residency
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) offers a PGY2 Pediatric Specialty Residency at Brenner Children’s Hospital (BCH). As one of the most outstanding patient care, teaching and research facilities in the nation, Brenner Children’s Hospital is committed to the special health care needs of children and adolescents. The staff of more than 55 physicians representing 27 medical and surgical specialties encompasses all areas of pediatric care.
The one year pediatric residency position is designed to provide the resident with a broad range of pediatric learning experiences in a progressive, academic setting that takes a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric patient care.
Rotations/Clinical Experiences
Clinical experiences are available in the following areas and flexibility in scheduling allows residents to tailor their learning opportunities.
Pediatric Critical Care
Neonatology
Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
Pediatric Nephrology
Pediatric Neurology
Pediatric Cardiology 

Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Pediatric General Surgery
Pediatric Infectious Diseases
General Pediatrics
Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
Pediatric Practice Management
Scheduling
- 12, one month rotations
- In July, the resident will spend time learning the distribution system in the Pediatric Satellite
- December is designated as a research and administration month
- Practice Management will be a one month rotation but a longitudinal experience as well
- Ambulatory Care will also be a longitudinal experience
Presentations
Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program. Anticipated presentation experiences include
- Teaching Certificate Program
- 1-hour NC CE-accredited program
- Journal club
- Case confrence presentation
- Inservices on rotations
- Project presentation at the Southeastern Residency Conference
- Lecture to the Physician Assistants program at WFBMC
- Lecture to the Neonatal Fellows Program at BCH
- Poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting

Precepting
By precepting students, the Pediatric resident will refine their teaching skills and further enhance their own clinical knowledge base. WFBMC is a rotation site primarily for students from Campbell University and Wingate Schools of Pharmacy (approximately 135 student months per year)

Application Process
Pediatric Specialty Residency
To apply for the Pediatric Residency, please submit the following items:
- A current copy of your curriculum vitae
- Official college transcripts for pharmacy and pre-pharmacy school coursework
- Three letter of recommendation submitted on your behalf.
- An essay* that addresses the following issues:
a) What are your ultimate career goals for completing a specialty residency in pediatrics and how do you feel our program will allow you to meet these goals?
b) Describe any research experience or special projects you have completed as well as any notable professional accomplishments you have achieved.
c) What personal interests do you have outside of pharmacy?
d) If applicable, you may also describe any special circumstances that you wish for us to consider.
*Please limit your essay to two pages (12 pt. font).
All application materials are due by January 10. The “rate limiting step” for some applicants is getting recommendation letters sent in a timely manner. Therefore, please make it a priority to request these letters early in the application process.
